Samhain Wishes

  • Oct. 31st, 2009 at 9:50 AM

Happy Samhain. I express my gratitude for all of the abundance that I have received throughout this past year. Thank you to those souls who have passed on. You guidance through whispers was invaluable. May you continue to transform in your journeys. Blessings for us all to gain inspiration for creativity in our artistic endeavors and generosity in all of our relationships. Happy Celtic New Year!

Samhain ritual for the solitary practitioner

  • Oct. 26th, 2009 at 11:37 AM

I received some feedback from fellow pagans that the last ritual I posted kind of left them out as they don't necessarily always practice with others. The following ritual has been sourced from
http://www.the-lone-pagan.com/index.html
I just want to acknowledge Angharad Y Deri's efforts and generosity.

Angharad's Solitary Wiccan Samhain Ritual
A Wiccan Samhain Ritual for the solitary practitioner.

Cast the Circle

Stand at the Northern edge of the area you designate to be your circle, facing outward. With your dominant index finger, feel energy build within you and flow down through your finger, out to the edge of your circle. Once you feel it flowing out of you, begin to trace your circle with your index finger pointing down to the ground and gradually walk sunwise, tracing the perimeter of your circle. If needed, make two or three rounds to really "feel" the energy flowing, and as the circle is marked on the ground, feel it extending upward and inward to create a dome, or half-sphere enclosing you, knowing that the other half is extending down beneath you so that you are in the middle of a giant ball. As you are forming the circle, say:

I build this magic circle, to create a space of peace and love between the Worlds. As my energy builds these walls, I can feel the God and Goddess adding theirs as well. May only good come from this space - as I will, so mote it be!

Invoke the Quarters

Proceed to the Eastern edge of the circle and say:

Spirits of the East, attend and bless this circle with the element of Air.

Light the candle, and visualize yellow light flowing from this gateway into the circle. When you can feel it, then proceed to the Southern edge of the circle and say:

Spirits of the South, attend and bless this circle with the element of Fire.

Light the candle, and visualize red light flowing from this gateway into the circle. When you can feel it, then proceed to the Western edge of the circle and say:

Spirits of the West, attend and bless this circle with the element of Water.

Light the candle, and visualize blue light flowing from this gateway into the circle. When you can feel it, then proceed to the Northern edge of the circle and say:

Spirits of the North, attend and bless this circle with the element of Earth.

Light the candle, and visualize green light flowing from this gateway into the circle.

Invite the God and Goddess

Say:

Beautiful Maiden, who dances on the breeze, Gentle Mother, who holds her children dear, Wise Crone, who teaches us lessons we don't always wish to learn. Join with me in this space, and may I be Blessed.

Verile Father, shining brightly upon your children, Agile Hunter, Son of the Goddess, Wise Man of the Oak, sturdy and strong, Smiling upon us even when you have been cut down. Join with me in this space, and may I be Blessed.

Recite the Sabbat Prayer for Samhain by saying aloud:

The Harvest is now over, as another year passes into the Sea. Lord, it appears you are leaving us, but behold! You are within The Lady's womb, waiting to be reborn at Yule. The time between now and then is a time of reflection and communion. The veil between this world and the Otherworld is thin, and we can remember those who have passed before us, knowing they have not truly left us, just as you have not truly left.

Meditate on this, and reflect upon any images that come to mind through the meaning of Samhain

When you are ready, perform any magical work you desire. This is a particularly good time for psychic work, such as scrying, tarot reading, or other forms of divination. It is also a good time for personal closure, such as saying "Good-Bye" to loved ones who passed in the previous year, or relationships that have ended.

Perform the "Cakes and Ale" rite

Raise the chalice in both hands, saying:

The Sun has ripened the fruit of the Earth.

Return the chalice to the altar and touch the drink with your athame, saying:

This drink is blessed by both the God and Goddess.

As you are about to take a drink from the cup, say:

May I too be blessed.

Hold your hands over the cakes, saying:

The moon has shone down upon the grain, These cakes are blessed by both the God and Goddess.

As you are about to take a bite from the cake, say:

May I too be blessed.

Closing the Circle

Thank the God and Goddess for attending you ritual.

Move to the East candle, and as you extinguish it, say:

Spirits of the East, thank you for your presence here. May you go in peace.

Move to the South candle, and as you extinguish it, say:

Spirits of the South, thank you for your presence here. May you go in peace.

Move to the West candle, and as you extinguish it, say:

Spirits of the West, thank you for your presence here. May you go in peace.

Move to the North candle, and as you extinguish it, say:

Spirits of the North, thank you for your presence here. May you go in peace.

Move once again to the East, and with your non-dominant index finger, touch the edge of the circle, drawing the energy back into your hand (don't let it move all the way into you, just as far as your arm) as you walk sunwise around the circle. When you have returned to the East and the circle no longer remains, return to the altar in the center and pointing the same index finger down into the Earth, release all of the energy into the ground and finish by extinguishing the incense and candle on the altar.

Writer's Block: Forgive and forget?

  • Oct. 26th, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Do you tend to forgive and forget or hold grudges? What is the longest you've ever stayed angry with someone? Is there anything the other person could say or do to win back your friendship and trust?

  1. If we had lived a few hundreds of years ago, we would not only have brought our cows and sheep in from the pastures. Most likely we'd slaughter a few of them, as well as some pigs and goats, smoking the meat so it would last through the cold months. Our grain that we picked back at Lughnasadh has been baked into bread, and all of our herbs have been gathered, and hang from the rafters in the kitchen. The harvest is over, and now it's time to settle in for winter with the coziness of a warm fireplace, heavy blankets, and big pots of comfort food on the stovetop.

  2. If you want to celebrate Samhain as the time of harvest's end, you can do so as a single ritual, or as the first of three days of ceremony. If you don't have a permanent altar in place, set up a table to leave in place for the three days prior to Samhain. This will act as a your family's temporary altar for the Sabbat. Decorate the altar with symbols of late fall, such as:

    • Skulls, skeletons, grave rubbings, ghosts
    • Harvest food such as pumpkins, squash, root vegetables
    • Nuts and berries, dark breads
    • Dried leaves and acorns
    • A cornucopia filled with an abundance of fruit and veggies
    • Mulled cider, wine, or mead

  3. To begin your ceremony, prepare a meal for the family -- and this is something that everyone can get involved in. Put emphasis on fruits and vegetables, and wild game meat if available. Also make sure you have a loaf of a dark bread like rye or pumpernickel and a cup of apple cider or wine. Set the dinner table with candles and a fall centerpiece, and put all the food on the table at once. Consider the dinner table a sacred space.

  4. Gather everyone around the table, and say:

Tonight is the first of three nights,
    on which we celebrate Samhain.
It is the end of the harvest, the last days of summer,
and the cold nights wait on the other side for us.
The bounty of our labor, the abundance of the harvest,
the success of the hunt, all lies before us.
We thank the earth for all it has given us this season,
and yet we look forward to winter,
    a time of sacred darkness.

  5. Take the cup of cider or wine, and lead everyone outside. Make this a ceremonial and formal occasion. If you have a vegetable garden, great! Go there now -- otherwise, just find a nice grassy spot in your yard. Each person in the family takes the cup in turn and sprinkles a little bit of cider onto the earth, saying:

Summer is gone, winter is coming.
    We have planted and
we have watched the garden grow,
    we have weeded,
and we have gathered the harvest.
Now it is at its end.

  6. If you have any late-fall plants still waiting to be picked, gather them up now. Collect a bundle of dead plants and use them to make a straw man or woman. If you follow a more masculine path, he may be your King of Winter, and rule your home until spring returns. If you follow the Goddess in her many forms, make a female figure to represent the Goddess as hag or crone in winter.

Once that is done, go back inside and bring your King of Winter into your home with much pomp and circumstance. Place him on your table and prop him up with a plate of his own, and when you sit down to eat, serve him first.

  7. Begin your meal with the breaking of the dark bread, and make sure you toss a few crumbs outside for the birds afterwards. Keep the King of Winter in a place of honor all season long -- you can put him back outside in your garden on a pole to watch over next spring's seedlings, and eventually burn him at your Beltane celebration.

When you are finished with your meal, put the leftovers out in the garden. Wrap up the evening by playing games, such as bobbing for apples or telling spooky stories before a bonfire.

What You Need:

  • A table to use as your Samhain altar
  • Decorations that represent the late autumn season
  • A meal with lots of veggies, fruit, and bread
  • A cup of wine or cider

Darkness within my head excites me. Lack of actual daylight does not. I seem to shut down and my inspiration flies to more temperate climates to wait out the fog that has engulfed my being for the months of virtual hibernation. That has been my story for three months now and I have become bored with the pitiful state of my stagnation. New endeavors are being undertaken as I write this. Please have a look at a new joint creation with my dear friend, the very twisted and talented artist - JoJo. Our international blog with updates on our Frankenstein fashioned experiments can be found in Creative Connections from San Francisco to Skye. We are in the process of merging Jo-Anne's fantastic illustrations and my disturbing Gothic musings in the soon to be printed No One Knows me like my Gnome.
I'll have  a sample of the work up here in the next day or two.

Greetings and Felicitations! Please do come join us if you are in the San Francisco bay area this coming weekend of December 6th and 7th 2008 at the Mission Bazaar.

We'll also have adoptable creatures made out of recycled/up-cycled components, unique clothing & belt buckles and gift cards.

My Cornucopia of Abundance overflows

  • Nov. 25th, 2008 at 9:48 PM

So, yeah my title is a bit cheesy, but today I'm in a place where I'm actually "getting it". I forget all too often that I'm the sorceress who manifests how my immediate environment shows up. For the past several months I have been at best slipping back down that muddy slope of self doubt, pity and then reaching bottom at a destination called resignation. "What the bloody hell am I talking about?" Well, I'm just spilling out the last vestiges of my attachment to the story that I'm a failure at most things I think I should be excelling at and that I am deeply inherently flawed and unlovable. That line of thought used to make for some exceptional drama and narcissism, but I'm afraid the soy milk has gone sour on that and now it all just seems slightly embarrassing to pretend to be in a state of helplessness or to portray myself as a victim of events that I have no control over. Sure this has been a year full of loads of challenges and some pretty rotten things have occurred. The thing is I'm finally beginning to see that I have had a role in how I respond and relate to those events. If I was powerful enough to create a life filled with trauma and scarcity then I must be powerful indeed. I imagine it would be prudent of me to shift and create one wherein I'm surrounded by possibility for growth and where I receive love and light in copious amounts so that I'm able to share that with anyone I come into contact with and even those I may never know personally. How incredible would it be to have that much and still feel completely satiated. I can imagine it and in so doing I'm feeling it on this very day. This is why I choose to share my cheesy, but heartfelt gratitude with any of you who end up here as you peruse the internet over the Thanksgiving holiday. Blessings.  Raina
